I scored these great books the other day

So I was waiting in the mall the other day and went to Powerbooks to kill time. I didn’t know they were having a clear out sale so lucky me!

I got Armistead Maupin’s More Tales of the City even though I don’t have the first book of the series. It was only 50 pesos so why not try it out, right? I was actually attracted to the cover art at first but the blurb hinted pretty good stuff from the story so I was sold.

I’ve only read like 5 pages and I already found myself chuckling! I don’t know much about the book (‘cept that it’s set in 70’s/80’s San Francisco and includes some homosexual characters) but with the nice combination of humor and wit in it I know that this is going to be an interesting read.

Now this is a book that I hesitated to buy because it was 500-something pesos (at 50% off). I’ve been acting like a cheapskate lately so 500 bucks was something I didn’t want to waste.

So I flipped through the pages…

..and was surprised to see that it’s a graphic novel AND a memoir! I’ve been looking for great graphic memoirs like Persepolis for a while now and WHOO! Here it is in my hands!

I was still kind of hesitant to get it but I sat down and read a page or two or three…and found myself halfway through the thick graphic novel! I don’t like reading inside a bookstore without paying for any books so I bought them and went home to continue reading.

What I love about memoirs is that they’re so intimate and real. Combine that with great illustrations and bam, you got a very engaging and enjoyable book.

It was about the author’s difficult life and how she dealt with her strange yet astonishing father. The colorful presentation and the honesty of the book made me fall in love with it. The author told her life in such a plain-spoken but interesting way, it’s hard not to indulge in this 247-page book.

I highly recommend Laurie Sandell’s graphic novel debut, The Impostor’s Daughter. That was 500 pesos well spent, definitely!
